From School Library Journal

Gr 2–5—Four spreads of fabulous paper engineering feature two-sided pop-up images of skyscrapers, bridges, museums, and a sports complex, while illustrated flaps lift to reveal facts about transportation, parks and gardens, the New York Police Department, museums, zoos, famous residents, and more. Each spread also includes a "little book" that provides a few lines on city celebrities of yore, local sports teams, Manhattan Island, and children's books that take place in the Big Apple; a chunk of text on the featured area of the city; loads of informative captions; and a challenge to locate images in the book. The architectural sites are rendered in black line and colored in pastels, with splashes of color (see the jazzy "All Along 42nd Street" spread). Along with the well-known sights that residents and nonresidents alike will be looking for are some newer landmarks: One World Trade Center (the Freedom Tower), the High Line, and the 9/11 Memorial. The focus is on Manhattan, but there are a few nods to the outer boroughs (Bronx Zoo, Staten Island Ferry, the Queens Unisphere, and the Brooklyn Bridge). Delightful and edifying, but bound to take a beating if it leaves the library.—Daryl Grabarek, School Library Journal

... you'll probably like the New York one too. She uses the same winning formula in this book with the two-sided pop-ups; one side showing the actual building, the back side giving history and other details. The object of the book is not to overwhelm the reader with spectacular paper engineering, but to provide a dizzying array of facts about everything New York. The challenge was a little greater in this book because she tried to include all five boroughs in just five spreads. Also because there are so many skyscrapers, sometimes the copy is a little hard to read. Each spread has a theme, the first one being about the financial district where we see and learn about Wall Street, Battery Park, Vertical City, The New York Trade Center, The Woolworth Building, Freedom Tower, The Brooklyn Bridge and more. Other spreads revolve around 42nd Street, The Empire State Building, Greenery and Galleries and the hated Yankees (sorry, I'm from Ohio). The reader not only gets the background on skyscrapers and bridges, but also stores, libraries, a train station, a cathedral, world famous museums, theaters, zoos, parks, hotels, a lighthouse and a stadium. Along the way we meet famous New Yorkers, from athletes, actors, poets and musicians to engineers, architects, politicians and financiers. There is something for all age groups here and I'll bet even life-long New Yorkers will learn a fact or two they'll be amazed at about their beloved Big Apple.

Received this book in no time, as a gift for my 10 yr old grandson, who will be visiting NYC with me this summer. The content and illustrations of the book are spot on, in that they include every site that we will be visiting, and describes them in an interesting way for someone his age. The pop ups are colorful and realistic depictions. However, several of them have to be manipulated manually, in order for them to pop up all the way. There was no shrink wrap on the book, and no padding in the box it came in..... just put in the box and taped up, to get knocked around during shipping. Therefore, I’m not sure if the book is actually new, which is what I thought I was purchasing. I would have given this book a five if it wasn’t for the used appearance, loose pages, and flat pop ups.

Lots of quality time has been spent looking through this book. It is filled with many many interesting facts about NYC on every page. the pictures are in great detail and the pictures have flaps to open to read. The popups are awesome and this book has become one of our favorites.

This was a Christmas gift, given to an adult. They loved it.

The book was not shrink wrapped; it appeared mohave been opened and returned. The colors were washed out and the pages thin. The content also was not accurate. Waste of money

This was a great purchase for my 6-1/2 year old grandson. He had recently been to New York City seeing the sights. He was thrilled with this book! So much so that I had to purchase another one for his friend who also went on the trip. Great reminder of their time spent in NYC and all the fun things they got to see and do. Thank you Amazon!!

Loved by my 23 year old grandson.

Pop-up books remain a passion for my now 25-year-old daughter. It has become a Christmas tradition to gift her with a pop-up book each year. This book was not a disappointment at all! Wonderfully detailed, and wonderfully New York!
