At first, I was somewhat unimpressed by this book. It seemed to be unfocused. For example, in the middle of a description of some historical data, there was suddenly a couple of pages of the author's personal life - and then back to the original historical account to conclude it. However, as I got further and further into the narrative I began to appreciate the format, which is basically one chapter per psychotropic class of drug: historical data interlaced with Ms. Slater's own findings. As a chemist who has done research into drugs, I missed seeing the chemical structure of the drugs, which always helps in comparing one drug with another. However, these are easily pencilled in. What did jump out of the book (and this has been my experience) is that drugs (especially prescription psychotropic drugs) are entirely hit or miss. This is exemplified beautifully when the author suggests that prescribing psychiatrists don't really need medical training as they have few distinct drugs to choose from, don't have the slightest idea how they work, what part of the brain they affect, their long term effects, or how they might interact with other drugs. Moreover, psychiatrists generally meet with the patient for 15 minutes, or less (thank you insurance), and say ,"try these and see if they help". Prozac, for example requires 4-6 weeks to take effect, yet the drug appears in the brain within a few hours of taking the first dose. What then is Prozac up to? Who knows? Certainly not the drug company which will spin a fictional tale about serotonin levels. Plenty of people with very high (or very low) serotonin levels breeze through life without being depressed. The bottom line, is just that: The Bottom Line. An almost endless stream of revenue into the coffers of drug companies world wide to anyone who feels that this crazy, hectic life we all lead is almost more than we can stomach. So, take a pill. True, there are people with extremely serious mental problems who benefit from some medications and it is worth their while putting up with the side-effects to be able to deal with life. But the message I got from this book is: for most of us, we would be far better off avoiding psychotropic pills particularly on a long term basis, because, as any pusher will tell you, you will eventually need to increase the dose again and again, and since no one knows what it is doing to your brain, why would you do this? Fortunately, Ms. Slater offers some interesting alternatives.

I have some knowledge of pharmacology as a Medicinal Chemistry major from a School of Pharmacy and thirty years of Forensic Toxicology - so I definitely appreciated this work. Lauren Slater has a way with words and writes in a very interesting manner - I never got bored. I am not certain of the scientific validity of all of her stories, but they are definitely tantalizing. It very certainly piques ones interest and makes one wonder about the driving forces of our medical professions and whether they could possibly let go of some of the monetary gain and look more to prevention and treatment of the patient...but can that happen. Read the book - most will be glad they did.

A very interesting book by the only person who could have written it. To one who has battled depression and who then had to battle the weapons handed me due to the grotesque side effects, I can understand the author’s frustration with a profession that is second only to false prophets in building a house of cards disguised as a cure. Working as a pharmacy tech only reinforces her arguments when I look into the pleading eyes of my customers being fed lies and placebos. And, like the author, I believe that the psychopharmaceutical industry is squashing natural cures due to their ready availability and lack of profit margin as fast as the carbon based fuel industry has sought to dam the demand for renewable natural energy. Capitalism surely eats it’s young...

I work in psych and i learned a lot from this book! We don't think about the actual patient experience and life many times when we write for these drugs. Thanks for opening up and sharing your life! (You also made me laugh!).

Great book a must read!

Very informative about the history of various medications and interwovened her own story with manic depression.. Excellent for the clinician and for the people who take psychotropic medication. Well worth the price.

interesting and informative book on antidepressants.

great
