I love bunnies because they are so intelligent, funny, individual and beautiful, and this book has given me more information about how the communicate for instance. It provides info about their personalities, their mind, emotions, etc. The book is written in a fun and easy way. There is only one negative point: pictures are in black and white. I guess it was done this way to reduce costs. but it diminishes the beauty of the bunnies. However, the negative point is only cosmetics. Overall, I think this is a must for anyone that is considering to live (or already lives) with an "urban" bunny.
HRS is THE best source for companion rabbits in the home. Read BEFORE adopting a rabbit - myths are dispelled and fantastic care info is layed out in easy to understand language. The only surprise you'll have when you bring bunny home is their personality; litter, diet, grooming, housing, illness and general habits are all covered! There's less panicing when you see what looks odd compared to other pets: the sideways body throw, sleeping w/eyes open and dreaming, treating a scratch to minimize more damage, eating their own poo from the source... all covered!
Before I opened the package I was a little disappointed--this book is so flat! It doesn't matter, though, because it's jam-packed with useful information, not only for beginners, either. I was thrilled to find loads of references, and even a special section, for taking care of disabled buns; while my bun is able-bodied, most of her kitty sibs are not, and that is my particular passion. And, of course, any human, bun, or being of any sort is likely to become at least a bit disabled as time passes. The only thing I'd add is a pic of a cart (wheelchair) bun; there are several references to carts, and while I've seen and used them I think it would be helpful for other bunny parents to be more aware of them.PS--I also appreciated the liberal use of pictures, especially the cross-species ones. I don't feel so funny for having a "long-eared cat" in the herd!
There are some useful things in this book, but I think it has been praised beyond its merits. The 1st edition, 25 years ago, no doubt was unique. Today there are many other books about pet rabbits that include things that this does not. I'm not by any means saying that it is a bad book, just not THE ONE. Probably no such book exists.It contains articles by a variety of authors, so the book might best be thought of as comparable to a book of short stories rather than to a novel.One thing puzzles me: how can wild carrot be listed as a class 1 toxin? Commercial carrots were developed from wild ones. Does this mean the whole plant or only parts? The young top growth in early summer looks the same for both commercial & wild.
I bought the first edition of this book years ago when I brought my first two bunnies home without knowing anything about how to keep them in the house. It told me everything I needed to know to start out, and how to get into the proper frame of mind to let the bunnies teach me everything else. The book goes beyond care instructions and maintaining health--it teaches you about interspecies relationships: human-rabbit, dog-rabbit, cat-rabbit, guinea pig-rabbit. I now work as the rabbit adoption coordinator for our local Humane Society and we always give this book out for free when someone adopts a bunny--it outlines our standard for humane bunny care. Every shelter director and worker should have a look at this book....it will transform the lives of rabbits in shelters who are often very misunderstood by their caretakers. The authors clearly understand and respect animals as valuable beings, not just as "playthings" for humans. Thus the book is a big step forward in the movement toward kindness and respect for all non-human beings with whom we share this earth.
This book may look small, but it is packed with so much helpful information. I grew up on farms with rabbits and *thought* I knew all there was to know concerning them, but I was so wrong! This book offers explanations on rabbit body language (very helpful!) and genreal behavior as well as gives tips on health care, litter training, and introducing a new bunny to your pet cat and/or dog. It explains why rabbits need toys and offers suggestions on what to feed your pet rabbit (and what not to feed him!). This book has really transformed the way I view rabbit care. If you have a rabbit or are considering getting one, please do yourself and your bunny a favor and read this book.
I think this book gives you a great basis in raising house rabbits. Nothing too detailed and sometimes it might be lacking a bit of info (like bonding two rabbits for example). But other than that, it's an AMAZING book for someone looking for solid info when getting started with rabbits. Yes, you can find some of this on websites but there are also a lot of generic and unhelpful information you have to sift through on the net.
I bought this the other day for the bargain price of $4.62 through the Amazon marketplace. It arrived in under 7 days and in excellent condition.The author is an experienced rabbit handler who has worked for years with the House Rabbit Society (Google same for their web site) to care for, and advance the cause of, rabbits.In particular, Harriman does an excellent job accounting for the rabbits' needs, social as well as diet. She makes it clear that rabbit ownership is not at all like owning a pet turtle, and lays out clearly what you'll need to be ready to provide for them in terms of care and, for want of a better word, "mateship"--rabbits are intensely social animals that need to be involved in the life of a family.We will probably be adopting our first rabbit in the next year or so. Harriman's book turned out to be an excellent primer, and I'd recommend it without hesitation!
