Delivered very quickly. I was so happy to find this dictionary. Originally had one back around 2000 when our girls were in 4H and we had 3 different girls from Japan come and stay with us during the summers and then one of our daughters went and stayed at their homes. Japanese is a very complex language and this dictionary helps you distinguish between different uses of their words and ours. Online translations are usually really off if you reverse translate Japanese back to English because of all the variables. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
I got the hardcover addition, I love this book vary much! I wanted to see a bit more Japanese. But I'm happy regardless. It's all in Romaji and the Japanese that is in here is not hiragana it's a mix of katakana and kanji witch is nice for advanced students but I'm just learning hiragana. I got the hardcover book and it lookes half used. Their is a few scratches and the sticker took off some of the leather on the book. It's fine though no missing pages or anything. I like this book!Edit: Definitely used. No one wrote in it or anything, just the pages are oldish, and the hardcover has scratches ect. I dont mind it, because its really minor. Its a great dictionary but I just thought I was buying it new. :)
For the price, there's nothing better. Most of the Japanese/English dictionaries out there either have not nearly enough entries in them to be useful, or, their Japanese listings are written using Japanese alphabetical order (-KSTNHMYRWN). This can be maddening. Also, most of the dictionaries that are using Japanese alphabetical order also neglect to include definitions written in english letters. In other words, if you look up the word EGG, they will list as its equivalent "åµ." They won't tell you how to say it (it's 'tamago' btw) . They also don't even bother to write it out in hiragana. They just show the Japanese character "åµ." This dictionary, on the other hand, will show you the Kanji for words and then they also spell out the pronunciation of the words in Roman letters.I have four of these dictionaries. I bought one, used it up, and then bought three more. I also bought a tube of very strong glue and glued my old one back together. I've been using it now for about 18 years. I can't praise the book highly enough.
This is my first Japanese- English Dictionary (I ordered 3 different at the same time, this one arrived first, still waiting for the other two). It looks kind of good, I had to purchase Japanese-English dictionary as google is such an awefull translator when it comes to asian languages,It arrived with pretty good condition (therefore yes it looks new). Also have a brief introduction on how to use it.I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because the words are romanized first, then with Kanji,Hiragana or Katakana, whichever way it should be written. ( I know is good for those that are totally new in Japanese and does not know at all about Kana and Kanji, however I would rather like The correct way to write it first (the romanization in parentheses).Another thing is that there is not Furigana, I love that it have the Kanji in the words so I can know how it should be writed correctly, but I would like furigana as well as there are some Kanjis that are pretty advance for a learner.Any way thank you for this wonderful dictionary. I hope you can keep improving and getting better :D .
it's a dictionary with katakana, hiragana and romanji-if you're studying japanese then you will know what i mean. AND, i need all three and FILLING THAT VOID -what's with the all caps?- now if they have a pocket size-ii digress, the point is, it covers all my language learning needs as i journey through the language frontier. wish me luck on this one captain, cuz i got the road map on this one!
I have purchased 5 other Japanese-English books in Japan in the last 4 years. I recently ordered this particular book because 1. My sister loves it. She uses it in the United States for here Japanese Language class, and 2. All the other books were somewhat lacking and I didnt realize what they were lacking until I first used this Random House version. What Random House delivered to me was more words. All the other books I bought were missing tons of words that are used everyday in Japan. Random House somehow realized that I would be searching for these magical words and produced a document where I could locate them all. Thank you Random House. You will forever be in my heart, and my memory along with all the words I am now able to speak in Japanese because of you!!!
I use these with my Japanese students. It's really more for me, the native English speaker, but I'm able to sound out the Romanized spelling of Japanese words to explain words to my students. And the older students can read the Japanese characters. It's extremely useful for me. Having said that, it's not as easy for my students to look up Japanese words because they're spelled with English lettering in the Japanese-English section. I knew this and it wasn't a problem for me at all. I highly recommend this dictionary if you're an English speaker!
I've been studying Japanese for a very long time. This is my 2nd dictionary. It's larger and easier to read. I like the fact that there are the Japanese section and the English section. These sections are very complete for any beginner or intermediate Japanese studies.
