If this book had been my first introduction to Unitarian Universalism, I never would have joined my congregation. On page 143 Buehrens praises John Wolf for saying that he would be a humanist for a theistic congregation and a theist for a humanist congregation. This balance between humanism and theism is missing from the book. Both authors appear to be pretty standard monotheists. They will sometimes conflate the word "God" with "Reality" or the "Ground of Being", but mostly it's clear that they are talking about the standard monotheistic version of God. In one passage they wonder why God would create so many cultures and languages, which seems really odd since these are obviously human creations, and the authors make it very clear that they strongly support the idea of free will and oppose any concept of predeterminism. The book would be much better if one of the authors had a more humanistic viewpoint.The book has a number of wonderful passages on the UU focus on "deeds not creeds", but this is message is undercut by the consistent unfair criticism of "secularists." They never actually define what they mean by "secularists," which makes it difficult to follow their criticisms. The dictionary definition is "a person who advocates separation of the state from religious institutions." which would include nearly all UUs. Do these secularists they're criticizing opposed to UU efforts to make the world a better place (i.e., our deeds), or do they just have different beliefs about the role of traditional religion in society (i.e., different creeds)? The criticism is often ridiculous. In one passage they argue that children raised in secular homes are more likely to join cults or follow crazy new age gurus. In another passage they argue that secularists are more likely to become alcoholics, again without any shred of evidence.In another passage they argue that the only purpose for filing a marriage certificate is in case you get divorced later, which is just laughably ignorant. There are over 100 civil benefits given to married couples. In their rush to condemn secularism they get basic facts wrong.
It is so nice to read church books that don't promise fire and brimstone. UUA promises loving support in one's own spiritual journey and demands nothing except that which one can or will consecrate to others in the congregation. I love this whole system, especially after I realized I had been practicing this organization's precepts for years, without knowing it. I look forward to the rest of my life spent living my chosen religion, rather than constantly trying to rationalize staying in the church which had been chosen for me.
I purchased the book to attend a class at a Universalist church. The minister was leading the class. I found the book to be informative and gave me some insight outside my background Christian upbringing. I am grateful to have the information from the book and the additional classroom information.
I've enjoyed this book very much and will use it as a reference book for many years. The basic philosophy of Unitarian Universalism is well described and its historical events well documented. It speaks volumes about the attitudes and hopes of modern liberal religious leaders today. This book explains the similarities of human religious thought all over the world. I like this groups embrace of diversity, respect for others religious beliefs, and it's never ending search for truth and understanding about the mystery of life.I'd recommend this book for everyone, whether you agree with it or not. This religious philosophy, in my opinion, is a step in the right direction.
I guess I'm looking for some spiritology. I had heard of the Unitarian church so I bought and read the book and it's just what I'm looking for. I attended one of their masses and it exceeded my expectations. A lot of the parishioners shared similar experiences and had similar views. We'll see what happens.
The book you are pointed to when you are thinking of joining a Unitarian Universalist church. I had it on hard copy and wanted a kindle version. I'm so glad that it's on kindle now. It's the perfect introduction and something you'll go back to years later.
I decided to give myself a chance to read this book. I am very picky reader and I started to read in the beginning of this book. I loved it so much than many religions, which it helped me to learn more about Unitarian Universalism. I felt so peaceful and free my spirit in the good way without any feeling guilty to God. I don't have to be perfect unlike other religion. You have to give it a try. Trust me. Thumb up!
