So... this is basically a round-up of headlines on these issues over the last few years. I had read about almost every single case the writer mentions. It's an important niche, but the book could have done more. It's self-help lite. Or maybe I was just expecting more than a fairly surface-level discussion. And some of the cases spoke to larger social issues -- i.e. these amazing, accomplished women were having to hustle in ridiculous ways to be valued in the workplace. Maybe a larger social movement is needed, not individual self-help books?

Wendy Sachs' "Fearless and Free" is a must-read for any woman on the cusp of pivoting her career, changing jobs, or feeling downright stuck. Through story after story, Sachs provides an honest menu of women's career pivots, worries, failures, and successes. As a woman in my 40s, I, along with my friends, are at that point where pivoting in our careers serves as a topic of discussion and angst as much as the challenges of our kids and home lives. Sachs nails the delicate balance of creativity, drive, longing, and insecurity that my friends and I discuss constantly. She does not sugarcoat the experiences she and her "case studies" have, but emphasizes, in an inspiring and doable way, that we all have failures along the path to success and career satisfaction. She weaves so much solid, practical advice throughout the stories of the women she profiles that I had to start folding pages and note-taking in the margins so that I wouldn't forget what I was reading! I've bought 3 copies of the book already to give to others, and am recommending it to all of my friends -- most of whom are, like me, thinking about career next steps 25 years out of college. Four years ago, Sheryl Sandberg inspired me to lean in, and now, Sachs has reassured me that the career pivot is within reach.

Well written and interesting, but all the women discussed have big time resumes and connections out the wazoo. I learned some good things, but as a 58 year old teacher, didn't feel I fit her target audience. I also wanted practical tools and concrete examples. For example when she discussed resumes, it would have been great to have had examples.

When I bought this in December 2016, it was full price and totally worth it, however, I have noticed that occasionally Amazon puts hardcover books on ridiculous discounts and today 9/26/17 it's like five bucks. I'm not sorry I bought when I did, but I hope others looking for solid career advice will learn about the insane pricing as Career Tip #1, take advantage of opportunities in timely fashion.

I saw that Oprah recommended Fearless and Free and that sparked my interest in buying this book. I loved Wendy Sachs's voice and style. The book is not just for women trying to "pivot" in their careers, but also for the moms who left the workforce and now are trying to get a job or figure out what they can do in the next chapter of their lives. So many of my friends can relate to this - I can too!

Fearless and Free is a smart and great read. Totally relatable for me and everyone of my friends currently trying to figure out how to get back into the working/career world after years of not working. It discusses all the issues we discuss, actionable and engaging. A must read!

I have worked for my husband for the last 10 years at his practice, before that taught, and before that did marketing and promotions. It has been hard trying to find a job and not really knowing how to market myself with the potpourri background that I have. I was getting really discouraged and hopeless. The book is what I needed to get excited again and welcome my background not shy away from it.

"Fearless and Free" by Wendy Sachs combines practical career advice with wonderfully amusing anecdotes and real world failure and success stories. Wendy is utterly relatable as she takes us through her own career pivots and opens our eyes to why it's ok (and probably the best thing that can happen to us) to fail and get back up again. You will finish feeling powerful, inspired and ready to take the next step -- however large or small that first step may be. I highly recommend this read!
