I got this for my dad in 2016, and only now in 2017 (with license in hand) is he able to enjoy it. Good pictures as always and he enjoys studying it and dreaming about catching some of these fine species. Me, I prefer to look at the pages, and get my fish from a can.
It's very thorough on what it does cover but I think it should have been split into several guides covering regional areas such as the East Coast, the Gulf Coast, the West Coast and inland freshwater areas. Because of the fact it tries to cover all areas in a single volume, it is not nearly as comprehensive as it could be had it been split up. I also think there could have been a more comprehensive set of color plates as a number of fish species described have no photo at all and some even have no line drawing.
This book is thick but thorough. As other reviewers have said it should have been divided into two books: one for fresh water and one for salt water fish. Not sure how the binding will hold up long term given the thickness of the book. A bit too large to keep in the tackle box. Four star rating is due to the thickness of the book
Great resource books on fish.
Gift for my daughter, who works at Worlds of Wonder Wildlife Museum & Aquarium and wanted these to help identify the fish. She loves them and so do her coworkers. :-)

I enjoy the National Audubon Society collection . This particular book gave me all kinds of information I needed. The photos are exceptional and the descriptive writing is also easily understood. I will have a greater knowledge of the different species of fish and continue to use as a reference to any further questions I may have. I also will enjoy sharing this book with my family and friends in the future.
As good as you will find. Compact enough to take fishing. Quality materials. Great pictures. Good for identifying what you have caught: helps to stay out of trouble! There are a lot or rules regarding fish these days. You better know what you can and cannot catch/keep and what they look like.
